Grand Prairie: The big city in the Peace River Country.  While the days in the greater region get colder in the winter months (and the nights grow even colder), the city stays warm with all the plenty of things to do. Grand Prairie presents three cozy events to keep your mind off the cold.

Cirque Musica Holiday

Concerts are nice, but concerts with visual experiences are much better. This isn’t just colours and bright lights, you’ll get to enjoy acrobats, jokesters and pranksters, and just an overall wintery Wonderland experience. The show is orchestrated by a live symphony orchestra that brings the music and action to life.  Come to Wonderland by Cirque Musica Holiday on Sunday December 16, 2018. The show starts at 5:00 PM at Revolution Place. Tickets range from $39 to $93. Make sure to get your ticket now as there is only one showing!

Dave Barr Ugly Sweater Party

Some of us hate them. Some of us love them. One thing is for sure: everyone has fun when they’re involved in the party. What are we talking about? Well Ugly Christmas Sweaters, of course! The Dave Barr Community Centre is hosting an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party (on ice!) on Saturday, December 22, 2018.  The party starts at 1PM and concludes around 3 PM. Bring your own skates, and they’ll bring the hot chocolate. It’s time to dig up that cringe-worthy and even more cringe-worthy dance moves on ice. Something for the community to enjoy right before Christmas itself.

Grand Prairie Paint Nights

Perhaps, you’re in the mood for something a little more low-key. We get it. Grand Prairie Paint Nights by Connie Goedee might be just for you (this event is 18+).  With only 20 spots available, the seats will go fast.  Join Connie in her “Wintertime” themed paint night, she provides the Canvas and Art supplies, and a free drink. This wintery theme is on December 19 from 7PM - 10PM at Pines.

If you are interested in these Grand Prairie events, but want to stay in a more gentle less city-like area, then it’s best to check out Paradise Inn & Suites in Valleyview. With complimentary breakfast and the best window views in Valleyview, it may feel like you never left home.

Here are three restaurants to dine at when you’re visiting Valleyview and, of course, don’t forget to book your stay with us here at Paradise Inn and Suites. Horizon Steakhouse

If you’re looking for a classy joint for a nice Friday night meal, look no further. Horizon Steakhouse has a great menu filled with plenty of options to suit a variety of tastes, from salisbury steak and old English fish and chips to veal parmigana and Buffalo chicken sandwich. They also have a menu for kids and seniors, as well as a dessert menu that includes cheesecake and even smores.

Tall Timber Coffee

This local coffee shop is known for its great atmosphere, delicious food, and, of course, top notch coffee. Industrial decor and touches like oversized couches and a fireplace make it a modern yet cozy spot to curl up and relax — or even get some work done, if you need to do so remotely. Tall Timber’s paninis and quiche are highly recommended, as is the espresso.

Travellers Restaurant

This classic diner feels like a step back in time. Come here for simple and good fare, like hamburger steak, fried chicken, and blueberry pie. And a side of nostalgia. Expect cozy little booths, charming decor, and friendly service.

We believe small is beautiful, and this is definitely the case for Valleyview, Alberta. The town has a history of fur trading, farming, then in the 1950s, oil was discovered in the Peace region, which then became the main industry for Valleyview. Luckily, much of the area surrounding our town is Crown land has been left untouched; offering a chance to explore the many beautiful rivers, lakes, and hiking trails. Once you’ve had your wilderness fix, come back into town for the following exciting events:

Valleyview Carnival- August 7
First on the list is the Valleyview Carnival! Located just a five-minute drive from our inn, this kid-friendly event will be fun for the whole family! This year they have a special deal for a $35 wristband, which allows full access to the theme park without having to pay by ride! West Coast Amusement offers everything from the gentlest kiddie rides to ones for true dare-devils, along with the best in classic crowd-pleaser festival food. Don’t miss out on the most thrilling day of the summer!

The Fair- August 11-12
Valleyview Agricultural Society will be putting on their 50th annual fair and rodeo again this year! This year’s family-friendly event has taken on the theme of “Buckles and Burlap”, so dress accordingly! It will feature a multitude of classic vendors, all kinds of contests, amazing food and of course, kicking bulls! The fair will also feature a rock-painting event from 11 am until 1 pm on the Saturday and Sunday! If you happen to have paint on you, it is recommended to bring some, as more is always helpful!

Sandtimer House Concert- August 23
The great thing about small towns is the closeness the citizens have with one another, and Valleyview is no different! This cute, relaxed, volunteer-run event is hosted at Josie’s home, and features the talented British Indie-folk band ‘Sandtimer’! Their sound is soft and eclectic, with melodic voices and captivating guitar textures, leaving the audience wanting more every time. Although it is a casual event and walking right in is fine, the organizers appreciate a phone call ahead of time so they can estimate the number of chairs to set up in their space. Usually, the events are quite intimate, with 30 guests, more or less. Snacks, juice, and coffee are provided free of charge, but bringing alcohol or food to share is always welcomed! Entry is $20 for adults, $10 for students, and free for kids 12 and under.

We provide a free deluxe continental breakfast for all our guests, and there’s even an onsite 24 hour Tim Horton’s to give you the fuel you need for those early morning rises. The only question is, where will you go? There’s some staggering places within easy driving distance of Valleyview, including a thriving city, some of Canada’s most beautiful natural scenery, and even a great provincial park that’s a short thirty minute drive away. And with the weather getting better every day, there’s no excuse not to get out and see the sights!

Young’s Point Provincial Park

We’ve talked about Young’s Point Provincial Park before, but it’s worth mentioning again - because it’s so great! You can do a whole host of activities at the park, which is a short drive from our hotel, including going to long walks, a bike ride, birding, fishing, and much, much more. If the weather is nice during your trip, make sure you get yourself down there.

Jasper National Park

Get up early and grab your Tim Horton’s: you’re going to be exploring one of Canada’s most beautiful destinations, Jasper National Park. The jagged peaks and wilderness of this section of the rockies will leave you awestruck. There’s little more to say, other than: you definitely don’t want to miss your chance to see this gem!

Edmonton

Make the drive over to Edmonton, Alberta’s capital city, and you’ll be treated to attraction after attraction. See the highlights of the Royal Alberta Museum or step back in time at Fort Edmonton Park. The Art Gallery of Alberta is also not to be missed if you’re a nature lover! Once you return back to our hotel, you’ll be able to get a good night’s rest in your extra comfortable bed. Perfection.

Don’t start looking forward to the autumn months just yet; we still have plenty of
summer left ahead of us in Valleyview. Plan a trip to our quaint town during August and you’ll be able to enjoy outdoor recreation activities, hit a round of golf, experience a local festival, and pick up fresh fruit and veg for your trip home.

Outdoor fun

Young’s Point is a terrific year-round destination. While the sun is still shining on us, head on down with the family for a long hike, kayaking, swimming, or for one of the park’s regular events. The provincial park is located about twenty minutes from the hotel by car.

Small town event

The town of Bezanson will be hosting the 60th Bezanson School Homecoming, Fair & Horseshow on August 26 - 27. There’ll be something for the whole family at the event, which includes a bike parade, food stalls, a fair show, softball tournaments, and much more.
